Measuring campaigns without fooling yourself

Marketing metrics are ratios, and ratios hide their assumptions. A campaign can show a strong return on ad spend while losing money once product cost, shipping and refunds are included, because ROAS is measured against revenue rather than profit. Reading a marketing metric well means knowing which costs it contains and which it quietly leaves out.

Attribution windows matter

Revenue attributed to a campaign depends on the attribution model and time window your ad platform uses. Comparing a seven-day figure from one platform with a thirty-day figure from another produces a difference that has nothing to do with campaign quality. Fix the window first, then compare.

Pair marketing metrics with margin

Before deciding to increase spend, check the underlying profit margin on what you are selling. A return on ad spend of three is comfortable at a seventy percent margin and loss-making at twenty percent. This is why the marketing calculators link across to the business and financial tools.
