How these business calculators fit together

Pricing decisions rarely rest on a single number. A margin figure tells you how much of each sale you keep; a markup figure tells you how the price was built from cost; a break-even figure tells you how much volume that price needs to sustain the business. Used together they describe the same decision from three angles, which is why the calculators in this category link to one another.

Choosing the right starting point

  • Reviewing performance: start with profit margin, because it works from figures you already have in your accounts.
  • Setting a new price: start with markup, which works forward from unit cost to a selling price.
  • Testing viability: start with break-even, which brings fixed costs such as rent, software and salaries into the picture.

Getting reliable inputs

The accuracy of any result depends entirely on the cost figures you supply. Decide in advance whether your cost includes shipping, payment processing fees, returns and packaging, and use that same definition consistently. Mixing a cost that excludes fees with revenue that includes them is the most common reason two people calculate different margins from the same sale.
